Thanksgiving is that time of year that we stop, pause, and give thanks for all that we have. But what does that mean? Should we give thanks for all of the stuff that we have, like our phones or our car or that new gadget?
In an article that we published called “Have You Ever Thought About Being Grateful for Yourself? A Personal Journey to Self-Appreciation and Strength.” We talked about self-gratitude and self-appreciation. you can read it here.
Sometimes We find that this time of year we get a little preoccupied with making sure that we have everything we think we need to host a thanksgiving dinner.
Turkey is in the oven
The table is set with tableware that matches the tablecloth
The house is clean, and the baseboards are dusted.
Potatoes, yams, corn, cranberries, rolls, chips, and dips, pies and salads and every other form of tasty foods that we can prepare is ready to be put on the serving table.
Oh my gosh I know I forgot something
And now comes the worry. Is everyone going to be comfortable? Is everyone happy?
In this state of worry and sometimes panic, it's easy to lose track of what is really important. That time with your family and friends is something that often gets overlooked. But it doesn't have to be that way.
Stop and take a moment to enjoy what really matters most. Give yourself room to not be perfect. Remember that you are enough! Friends and family usually don't remember if the turkey was a bit dry.
They remember that you invited them to be with you for a special day of thanks. They remember that they were able to spend that time with you. That is what we are thankful for. We can be thankful that we put thought into getting together. It's not always going to be easy. The mashed potatoes might be too lumpy. The turkey might not be ready on time. It's okay!
Celebrate the fact that you are you and that is enough for the rest. Embrace the uniqueness that you have to offer, and remember that your family is there for you, and not how good the turkey is! But it is nice when it comes out right.
Treat yourself with a little kindness today. You’ve truly earned it.
Go ahead and craft that Thanksgiving!
Time is the one thing we do not get the chance to do over. We can cook another turkey literally the same day if we wanted to, but we don't get wasted time back. Being grateful for the time we have with those we choose to spend it with should always be the goal.
That is so true! We spend hours cleaning before the hours cooking and in truth not one person notices it the mirrors are clean. We wear ourselves out and we are too tired and stressed to enjoy the day.
Calm down! My turkeys never 'pop' on time and it's become part of the Thanksgiving tradition!
Enjoy the day and as every day, be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving!
